Cinque Terre cannot be described. Five old Italian villages lit on the steepest cliffs at the seashore. At first, the place was entirely isolated and you could only go there on foot or by sea. Nowadays there is a narrow road, but the car is still a very bad idea. The best way to get here is by train which offers unique views each time it goes out of the tunnel. The trip from the closest town La Spezia takes only a few minutes.
According to the reference books, Vernazza is the most beautiful villages of all five. This is exactly why you should start with some of the others, I went to Manarola, for
example. Words can never say what I saw there. And in the evening when the last train leaves and one million Asians go home together with their cameras, the whole Cinque Terre is yours.
There are winding paths, steep shedded stairs and endless terraced gardens with vines and olive trees. Pizza, lasagna, all kinds of fish and sea food – everything is sold in the street and tastes great. There are various Italian desserts and the best ice-cream.
As I said, words cannot describe it, you just have to go.
